Survey Methodology (Wiley Series in Survey Methodology)

by Robert M. Groves

Survey Methodology by Groves et al

This book is designed mainly to support the teaching methodology of field surveys. It provides all the basics in conducting quality surveys. Researches in human and social behavior these days rely on empirical data, yet many surveys fail to collect good, stable data.  Sometimes this is due to miss-specification of the target population; sometimes they design a faulty sampling plan. This book helps us understand the sources of these potential errors and how it is possible to correct them.

In my work I support researchers in running surveys and building statistical analyses based on the data collected. What is missing in the book, and this is my main critique, are more examples of how to build a questionnaire which represents theoretical aspects (hypotheses) and how to validate questions based on this theoretical ground rather than only on empirics. I do recommend the book for those who advise students in taking their first steps toward conducting their own research.
